Living in Singapore means dealing with hot, sweaty feet—especially when we’re always walking, commuting, or wearing closed shoes. This warm and moist environment is the perfect place for fungal infections, like athlete’s foot, to grow.

Athlete’s foot is very common here, but the good news is: it’s easily preventable and treatable. At Feet First Podiatry, we help people manage this condition every day with simple, effective care.

What Is Athlete’s Foot?

Athlete’s foot (or tinea pedis) is a skin infection caused by fungus. It usually starts between the toes and can spread to the soles or sides of the feet. You don’t have to be an athlete to get it!

How Do You Know If You Have It?

Watch out for these signs:

  • Itchy or burning skin between your toes
  • Peeling, flaking, or cracked skin
  • White, soggy skin (especially between toes)
  • Small blisters or redness

Why Is It So Common in Singapore?

  • Hot and humid weather makes your feet sweat more
  • Closed shoes and synthetic socks trap moisture
  • Public places like gyms, pools, and hawker toilets can spread the fungus

5 Simple Tips to Prevent Athlete’s Foot

  1. Keep Your Feet Dry
After a shower or swim, dry between your toes properly—don’t rush!
  2. Wear Breathable Footwear
Choose airy shoes or sandals when you can. Avoid tight shoes, especially in the heat.
  3. Change Socks Often
If your feet sweat, change into dry socks during the day. Use cotton or moisture-wicking socks.
  4. Use Antifungal Powder or Spray
Lightly dust your feet and shoes to keep them dry and fungus-free.
  5. Don’t Go Barefoot in Public Areas
Use slippers in public showers, pools, or shared toilets (e.g. at gyms or hawker centres).

Already Got It? Don’t Wait.

Mild cases can be treated at home with over-the-counter antifungal creams. But if:

  • It doesn’t go away after a week or two
  • It keeps coming back
  • It spreads or cracks badly

Then it’s time to see a podiatrist.
